Useful Resources: Socius.com's Movie Pages

From the essential website Socius.or.kr come information about Movie Theatres in Daejeon. Kim Hogg writes:

"There are many places to go see movies in town, from a tiny art cinema to small mom and pop theaters to large cineplexes. Finding what’s playing, however, is a little more difficult unless you speak some Korean. Korea Listings has disappeared and until someone wants to step up and do it, CineCine is the best place to check it out. Their listings are complete and accurate. You can also check out what’s planned for release (Korean, but click through on the pictures to get the original name on any foreign-language/Hollywood films)"

Seminar: Alan Oppenheim Monday 24th March 2008 [KAIST]

Allan writes: "There are many styles of doing research and of choosing research problems. In my group at MIT we have come to refer to our style as "One Plus One Could Equal Three". In this talk I will hopefully explain what I mean (even if you may not be convinced that it's a good style) and what types of topics it has led us to. In the process, I'll describe some of our current and recent research that developed out of a little bit of chaos theory, quantum mechanics, new sampling ideas and biology, not necessarily all mixed together."

Alan V. received the S.B. and S.M. degrees in 1961 and the Sc.D. degree in 1964, all in electrical engineering, from MIT. He is also the recipient of an honorary doctorate from he has also been affiliated with MIT Lincoln Laboratory and since 1977with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Festival: Easter 23rd March 2008 [Christians]

According to kumc.edu.com, Easter is "...celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, [and is]the most joyous occasion in Christianity. It also marks the end of Lent. The date of Easter varies each year but always falls between March 22 and April 25. The date is set by determining the Sunday following the full moon on or after the vernal equinox. According to the Gospel of St. John and other scriptures, Mary Magdalen arrived at Jesus' tomb only to find it empty. An angel told her that Jesus had risen and ascended into heaven. Many churches hold sunrise services on Easter Sunday to symbolize the return of light to the world after Jesus' resurrection. The day is observed with feasts and celebrations."

"The name 'Easter'", they note, "reflects many pagan customs that are now associated with the holiday ... The Easter egg [ed: see the picture above] is an example of the pagan origins of Easter. Pagans believed that eggs symbolized earth being reborn each spring. Christianity adapted this custom to symbolize the rebirth of humanity. Easter eggs were first decorated in the late 13th century C. E. but the most famous eggs were created by Carl Faberge.

Festival: Nouwruz [New Year] 21st / 22nd March 2008 [West & Central Asia]

Nowrūz (Persian: نوروز, various local pronunciations and spellings) is the traditional Iranian new year holiday celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Albania, Bahrain, Armenia, Georgia, the countries of Central Asia such as Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, as well as among various other Iranian and Turkic peoples in Iraqi Kurdistan, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan, India, Northwestern China, the Caucasus, the Crimea, and the Balkans.

Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the Iranian year and Bahá'í year. As well as being a Zoroastrian holiday, it is also a holy day for adherents of Sufism and the Bahá'í Faith. In Iran it is also referred to as an Eid festival, although it is not an Islamic feast. Alawites also celebrate Nowruz. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox (start of spring in northern hemisphere), which usually occurs on the March 21 or the previous/following day depending on where it is observed. Festival: Purim 21st March 2008 [Jewish]

Purim is a joyous Jewish celebration which occurs on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar in the Hebrew calendar beginning at sunset. According to the Book of Esther (the Megillah), the king of Persia, Ahasuerus, was nearly convinced to kill all the Jews in his land. Ahasuerus' chief advisor Haman despised Jews, especially a man named Mordechai who had refused to bow before Haman. Mordechai's niece, Esther, was Ahasuerus' queen. Haman wanted to punish all Jews for Mordechai's actions and convinced Ahasuerus of his position. Ahasuerus, unaware that his queen was Jewish, accepted Haman's plan to cast lots, or Purim, to determine a day for murdering the Jews. Esther intervened on behalf of her people by telling the king that she was Jewish. Upon hearing this, Ahasuerus ordered Haman's death instead and Mordechai assumed Haman's position as chief advisor. During Purim, the Book of Esther is read aloud in the synagogue. When Haman's name is mentioned, the listeners stamp their feet, boo and hiss and make noise with graggers [kumc.edu.com]
